This year, Art Beijing returned—its content again striking something of a balance between bad taste and kitsch, and encouraging inclusions mostly from mainland galleries. Of definite note, however, is the new Shanghai-based gallery Antenna Space. From Beijing, Space Station continued its run of engaging displays (its show at the Armory delivered humor with Doublefly Art Group) with a crowded mounting of young artists’ works—paintings cheek-by-jowl with video screens. Platform China brought new pieces by Wang Ningde and large paintings by Ma Ke. Pekin Fine Arts, too, staged a striking combination in abstract works by Huang Zhiyang and Aniwar. Taipei-based Eslite Gallery offered a powerful group of portrait and landscape paintings by the mature Beijing artist Wang Yuping—a choice both solid and refreshing for this ostensibly local art fair.
