Galerie Urs Meile will present a selection of paintings and works on paper by the German artist Christian Schoeler (1978 – 2015) under the title Rembrandt as a Boy
In his paintings Schoeler devoted himself to re-interpreting the traditional genres of portrait, still life, and landscape. The fragility of his works of art owes much to the artist’s painterly treatment of light, as well as to the translation of his own physical experiences onto the surface of the canvas. In the last two years it was no longer possible for Schoeler to paint, as a severe illness hindered him from continuing his intensive exploration of painting.
The artist, who died in December 2015, left behind a rich oeuvre. The first exhibition after his death features exemplary paintings from his body of work.
