Symposium: “Sites of Construction: Exhibitions and the Making of Recent art History in Asia”
[Press Release]

[Press Release]
SYMPOSIUM| SCREENING
Sites of Construction
August – October 2013
Where Multiple venues

Exhibitions are where artworks meet their public. In the context of Asia, however, in the absence of systematic public collections and substantial academic art history departments dedicated to 20th and 21st century art from the region, exhibitions are more than just sites of display and interaction. Exhibitions have become the primary sites of art historical construction for recent art from the region. AAA explores the impact of this phenomena through a major international symposium, and an accompanying programme of film screenings.

Symposium | Exhibitions and the making of recent art history in Asia

21 – 23 October 2013

Call for submission | Programme | Speakers | Registration | Acknowledgement

This symposium is part of a long-term inquiry into the implication of exhibitions becoming the primary sites of art historical construction. The three-day symposium explores the multiple roles exhibitions play through the participation of international scholars, curators, writers and artists. It will be organised in four sessions punctuated by three keynote speeches.

Film Programme | The moving image as a site of art historical construction

August – October 2013

The documentary form has been employed in myriad ways to record the ecology of the art field, offering endless potential to create new stories, complicate old ones, and circulate them to an expanded audience. This screening series looks at how documentaries can shape the way histories of art can be constructed, remembered, mystified, and debated. Over 20 selected titles will be screened at multiple venues from August to October. This series will end in October to coincide with the symposium ’Sites of Construction: Exhibitions and the making of recent art history in Asia.’

Book Display | Picks from the Collection

29 August – 26 October 2013
As a prelude to the symposium, Picks from the Collection presents a selection of exhibition catalogues and other relevant material, the majority of which will be used as case studies by speakers in their symposium presentations. more…
