About This Fellowship

This Fellowship has been created by the School of Art, Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (BIAD), at Birmingham City University, UK in conjunction with the Chronus Art Center (CAC) in Shanghai. The Fellowship offers an exciting opportunity for an artist at the commencement of or at a critical point in their professional career, to further develop his or her practice. The Fellowship will be based in the School of Art. The successful applicant will be expected to become a full and active member of the academy at the CCVA and of the research community within the School.

Eligibility

This Fellowship is designed particularly for current students or graduates, of Chinese nationality, based either in China or in the UK. The successful applicant is to hold a postgraduate degree in Fine Art or in a related subject and be able to communicate in fluent English orally as well as in writing.

Value

A total award of £10,000 will be offered.

  •   This is paid on a monthly basis for 6 months, at a rate of £1,000 per month;
  •   Includes one international return flight between China and the UK;
  •   The remaining £3,000 can cover both local transportation in UK and materials forproduction. (* This award is exempt from taxation and other deductions)Fellows will:
  •   Be required to commit the majority of their time to the Fellowship and to work in and from the studios of the School of Art in Margaret Street, Birmingham;
  •   Engage in the development of the CCVA;
  •   Contribute at least two seminars within the School.Method of Application & SelectionLogin to the CAC website,and download the application pack. The application form should be accompanied by visual evidence (e.g. PowerPoint/Keynote/PDF presentations, or videos, soundtracks) with accompanying information such as dimensions, materials, duration, etc., and a written statement of not more than 800 words in English. The above materials should only be submitted online as digital files. The candidates selected following receipt of this material will be asked to make a 15min presentation for the panel.Application Date:

About Chronus Art Center (CAC)

Chronus Art Center (CAC) is the first non-profit art organization in China to focus on new media art experiments, production, exhibition and education. It was co-founded by entrepreneur Dillion Zhang, independent curator Li Zhenhua, and Hu Jieming, a pioneer artist in Chinese digital media and video installation. Founded in the autumn of 2013, CAC gives direct support for the creation of new media art, and education on this subject, in China and abroad through residency and fellowship programs, exhibitions, public education activities, publications, and new media documentation.

CAC is located in the M50 Creative Park near the Suzhou River with a floor area of 800 square meters. Since its foundation, CAC has held exhibitions and lectures such as “Extra Time” and “The Best of Times, The Worst of Times”, etc., has cooperated with the Cross Media Department of China Academy of Art, Hangzhou, and MOMENTUM, Berlin where Pandamonium curated by David Elliott and Li Zhenhua was presented.

As an attractive innovation platform, CAC aims at providing a communication space for artists, curators, and scholars from different areas, where the public can also experience the artists’ creative ideas; understand the social, cultural and political significance of new media, and find new point of view with which to contemplate contemporary society.

About Birmingham City University and Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (BCU/ BIAD)

Initially established as the Birmingham College of Art with roots dating back to 1843, it gained university status in 1992 and was renamed Birmingham City University in 2007. BIAD’s graduates are highly active in many fields and contribute to essential creative artworks.

About The Centre for Chinese Visual Arts (CCVA)

The Centre for Chinese Visual Arts is hosted by Birmingham Institute of Art and
Design(BIAD), Birmingham City University. CCVA aims to foster new perspectives and expertise of both practical and theoretical studies on Chinese art, design and visual culture in an international context. It encourages and develops international and interdisciplinary collaborative research projects of Chinese visual arts, and offers academic support and joint supervision within the CCVA International Partnerships for postgraduate and research degree studies. Activities include curating exhibitions, organising conferences and creating other opportunities for scholarly exchange and postdoctoral research. CCVA draws particularly on its MPhil and PhD research programmes.
