Temporal Turn: Art and Speculation in Contemporary Asia

[Press Release]

NOVEMBER 10, 2016 – MARCH 12, 2017 / 3RD FLOOR AND SOUTH BALCONY

Temporal Turn: Art and Speculation in Contemporary Asia will be a major international exhibition of Asian contemporary art opening November 10, 2016. The exhibition explores a rich mosaic of ideas about time and history from a generation of artists embedded in what has been dubbed “the Asian Century.”

Many of the artists featured in Temporal Turn adapt scientific methodologies to ponder the past, present, and future, while others investigate the construction of time and history through the lens of deep-rooted cultural perspectives. By focusing on contemporary art from across Asia, Temporal Turn considers varied projections about our world grounded in complex issues such as technology and globalism from artists working in a region anticipated to dominate politics and culture in this century.

Five thematic sections—exploring technology, science fiction, mythology, and more—will provoke speculative thought in audiences by infusing history with a creative dose of the future.

Temporal Turn draws from the Museum’s permanent collection augmented by international loans, and will feature four site-specific commissions by Rohini Devasher and Sahej Rahal (India), Park Jaeyoung (South Korea), and Konoike Tomoko (Japan), created exclusively for the exhibition. Gallery talks, film screenings, and art activities will further engage the public.
