Matrix
Faizal Yunus
[Press Release]

Richard Koh Fine Art (RKFA) is pleased to present Matrix by Faizal Yunus at Richard Koh Fine Art, Bangsar Village II, Level 2, Lot No. 2F- 3, Jalan Telawi 1, Bangsar Baru, Bangsar, 59100 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 22 November – 5 December 2016. Matrix is Faizal Yunus’s first solo exhibition. The opening reception will be held on the 22nd of November (Tuesday), from 6 – 9 pm.

Matrix features artworks that display traces of everyday objects composed into abstract compositions or visual poetry and incorporate techniques of printmaking and painting. In the tradition of printmaking, a matrix is an object or a surface in which an imprinted image originates from. In Faizal’s practice, his matrix is a dense surface composed of a variety of objects sourced from his domestic setting or from his workplace such as rubber bands, bubble wrap, fabrics, strings and bits of cardboard. Indistinct and definite objects jostle for attention in the compositions and Faizal would prior to printing, create the compositions on a flat surface and then press either a piece of paper or canvas onto the objects, imprinting the contours and silhouettes. The mark-making process is intuitive and includes the act of careful planning while being open to slippages and mistakes. Treating his works almost like a recording of his environment, the imprints are believed by the artist to articulate his spiritual, physical and living conditions in this moment in time.

Faizal Yunus (b. 1989) graduated from UiTM with a bachelor degree in Fine Art in 2012, majoring in printmaking techniques. He has participated in a number of group exhibitions in Malaysia since 2010. Originally from Pahang, he now lives and works in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
