Forget the Future: The 6th Guangzhou Triennial

The last two decades of precipitous change have provided much grist for recent exhibitions, artist talks, and essays. The pre-eminence of digital technologies in society, the unpredictable advances in biotechnology and Artificial Intelligence, and irreversible environmental degradation encapsulated under the banner of the Anthropocene all speak to a certain disquiet towards unproblematic notions of progress.

The Snake that Eats Itself

In the small alleyway of Hi Lung Lane in Yau Ma Tei, Kowloon, such iconography gains unexpected meaning cast in the bright LED awning hanging over a currency exchange shop… Paradoxically, as we’ve witnessed more and more recently—despite talk of walls, borders, and ongoing trade wars—we get nowhere unless things keep moving.

Local Variants

The first was that we understand our localities better than outsiders do; and the second, was that we know better than the locals how things ought to be. This brings me to reflect again on the anxiety caused by On Practice—Northeast Asia (实践论-东北亚) a year and a half ago; it’s relevance seems pretty clear.
